After battling Parkinson’s for so many years, the beloved star passed away

Richard Lewis, Beloved Comedian and ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Star, Dies at 76

Renowned comedian and actor Richard Lewis, best known for his role on the TV show Curb Your Enthusiasm, has passed away at the age of 76. His publicist confirmed that Lewis died of a heart attack on Tuesday. The news was first reported by Deadline and was later widely mourned across social media, with tributes from fans, co-star Larry David, and actress Bette Midler.

Richard Lewis rose to fame as a stand-up comedian in the 1980s, captivating audiences with his neurotic and self-deprecating humor. He became a frequent guest on late-night talk shows such as The Tonight Show, The Late Show with David Letterman, and The Howard Stern Show. His distinct comedic voice and timing made him a beloved figure in the comedy world.

On Curb Your Enthusiasm, Lewis played a fictionalized version of himself, often appearing alongside Larry David. The show, which became a cultural phenomenon, featured Lewis’s sharp wit and unique comedic style. He was also known for his roles in Anything But Love, Robin Hood: Men in Tights, Once Upon a Crime, and The Elevator.

In April 2023, Lewis used his social media platform to discuss his health struggles, revealing that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He recounted a series of unfortunate medical events, including multiple surgeries on his back, shoulder, and hip, before the Parkinson’s diagnosis. Despite these challenges, he expressed gratitude for catching the disease early and managing it with medication. At that time, Lewis announced his retirement from stand-up comedy, choosing instead to focus on writing and acting.

Larry David, in a heartfelt statement shared by HBO, paid tribute to his friend and colleague. “Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital. He’s been like a brother to me my whole life,” David said. “It was very rare for someone to be both the funniest and the nicest at the same time. But today he made me sob, and for that, I’ll never forgive him.”

Tributes poured in from fans and fellow comedians, who remembered Lewis not only for his humor but also for his vulnerability and honesty. Bette Midler expressed her sorrow, calling him “a very funny man who will be missed by all.” Actor Albert Brooks also paid tribute, highlighting the importance of Lewis’s work in today’s world.

Lewis leaves behind his wife, Joyce Lapinsky, whom he met in 1998 at a party for Ringo Starr’s new album. The couple got engaged in 2004 and married in 2005.

Richard Lewis’s passing marks the loss of a comedy icon whose influence and presence will be deeply missed.
